Google Merchant Center: a setup guide for Shopify stores
Google Merchant Center is Google's free tool for sending your product catalog to Google. Once your products are in Merchant Center, they can appear in free listings across Google and power paid Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns. Shopify stores usually connect through Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel, which syncs products automatically.
What Merchant Center does
Merchant Center holds your product feed: titles, prices, images, availability and identifiers for every product you sell. Google uses it in two ways:
- Free listings. According to Google's Merchant Center help, products can appear at no cost on Google Search, the Shopping tab, Google Images, Google Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini.
- Paid ads. Linking Merchant Center to Google Ads lets you run Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns from the same feed.
Connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center
Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel is the standard way to connect. It's managed by Google and, in Shopify's words, "automatically syncs your products and relevant information about your Shopify store with the Google Merchant Center."
In outline:
- Install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store.
- Connect your Google account, and create or link a Merchant Center account.
- Review your store details in Merchant Center, such as shipping and return policies.
- Choose which products to sync, then let the first sync run.
- Check product status in Merchant Center and fix any issues.
The channel is available only for certain countries and currencies, so check eligibility for your store. If you already have a Merchant Center account connected another way, review Shopify's guidance before connecting, to avoid duplicate products.
Feed attributes that matter
Google's product data specification lists every attribute. These are the ones that most affect whether, and how well, your products show:
| Attribute | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Title | Main factor in matching searches. Lead with what the product is, then brand, key attribute, size or color |
| Description | Supports matching; describe the product, not your store |
| Image link | Clear product image on a plain background; no promotional overlays |
| Price | Must match your product page exactly |
| Availability | Must match your product page: in stock, out of stock, preorder or backorder |
| Brand | Required for most products with a manufacturer brand |
| GTIN | Barcode number; helps Google match your product to its catalog. See what a GTIN is |
| MPN | Manufacturer part number, for products without a GTIN |
| Product type | Your own category; useful for organizing Shopping campaigns |
Clean titles and accurate identifiers usually do more for performance than any bidding change.
Common disapprovals and how to fix them
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Price mismatch | Feed price differs from the product page, often after a sale or currency change | Keep prices synced; avoid manual feed edits; check sale prices and variant prices |
| Availability mismatch | Feed says in stock, the page says sold out, or the reverse | Make sure inventory sync is working; check stock at your online fulfillment location |
| Missing or incorrect GTIN | No barcode for a product that has one, or a made-up or wrong number | Add the real GTIN from the manufacturer; never invent one |
| Image problems | Watermarks, text overlays, placeholders or low resolution | Use clean, high-resolution product photos |
| Missing attributes | Brand, condition or size/color missing for products that need them | Fill in the attributes in Shopify product fields or metafields |
Google warns that price and availability mismatches can lead to preemptive item disapproval, so these two are worth checking first. See Google's guide to fixing product data quality disapprovals.
Free listings vs Shopping ads
| Free listings | Shopping ads (and Performance Max) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Pay per click |
| Where | Search, Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps, Gemini | Search results, Shopping tab and Google's ad network |
| Control | None over placement or position | Budgets, bids, product groups, targets |
| Best for | Baseline visibility for every product | Scaling sales of profitable products |
Run both. Free listings cost nothing, and the same feed powers your ads.
